Bermuda, 18-25 December, 1999
General trip notes:
Vacation for Caroline, the kids, grandma Maggie, and me. Bermuda is about the same latitude as North Carolina - and in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. Temperature was 60's and 70's. It rained on the 24th, most of the day, otherwise nice and sunny. Farrah completed her open water bookwork and pool time before we left, and did a PADI referral to Nautilus Diving. Bermuda is 32°29'N latitude - the northernmost coral reef system in the world. Heinz was the instructor - and took very good care of us all as we were diving (off the south part of the island). Dives were 10-15 minutes away by boat. We also got some nice relaxation time - and visited most of the touristy places. Bermuda is expensive - $2 bag of chips marked UP to $3.50, etc. Bermuda dollars and US dollars are used interchangably. 15% gratuity is usually added to the bill. Tap beer $5-6, and sodas are NOT free refills! Pickled Onion - good food, slow service. Hog Penny very good food, excellent service. 1/2 gallon of milk was $3.15. Bus system in Bermuda is very efficient. We got around town on 7 day passes ($34 adults, $15 kids). Bermuda doesn't have rental cars.

Notes:
Wreck was in many pieces, partially covered by sand. The ship struck a reef off the south shore on 6 Sep 1864, and sank in 8 minutes. Various finger and brain coral, large purple fans. Large stoplight parrotfish, trumpetfish, blue chromis, great star coral, blue angelfish, horse eye jack, dusky squirrelfish. Weight too much at depth, maybe just a little too much shallow. Suggest 22lbs. Heinz was boat captain and doing Farrah's open water dives. Farrah did first dive fine but had sinus congestion on the second (and didn't complete it). We had all been congested for the last week or so. Profile 2@60(A)/15@50(E)/15:40(J)/7:35(P).

Farrah's #2 open water dive. Took pictures, handed camera up after dive, but the camera apparently fell off the boat :-( Lots of wreckage, 3 and 7 inch gun shells, partly corroded, huge piston rods and other engine parts. Very calm seas and sunshine - great day for diving.

Notes:
Leaned back as walking to get in water - boat helper Michael wasn't holding my tank anymore, fell back, twisted my left knee BADLY (heard it crack-CRACK as I fell). Sat out for 20 minutes, then dove with instructor Heinz and Farrah for a few minutes (Farrah's fourth open water dive - she's doing GREAT!) - then joined Mark (divemaster) and the others. Knee is very sore and stiff. We'll see whether I can dive tomorrow or not (tomorrow will be Farrah's last dive to get certified). Interesting reef - brain coral, purple fans, fire coral, one sea anemone. After dives, Heinz took Farrah and me back out on the boat to look for my camera (overboard during dive#58) - we didn't find it. Heinz was VERY customer focused and caring - NOT just working for tips like many dive operations.

Notes:
Farrah completed open water certification! Best dive of the trip - Divemaster Derek gave us a nice tour with swimthroughs. Large Nassau grouper, black turgin, grey snapper. Caroline was undecided, but VERY happy she went. Started to rain about an hour after we returned - worked out well to only do one dive. A lot of the dive was at 15-20 feet. NICE reef and corals, one sea urchin. The morning was a beautiful sunrise looking out the bedroom window - palms silhouetted in black, changing to royal blue and deep orange, lightening to bright orange then yellow, as wispy clouds appeared.
